Yik Yak is Becoming Less Anonymous

Yik Yak has been known as an anonymous social app since its inception. The location-based app allows you to make comments and statements like on Twitter but only share it with people nearby. It can be a fun and interesting app, but there has been a problem with bullying in the past. The hope is that by making users on Yik Yak less anonymous, there will be less bullying and people will find it easier to chat.

The app now offers profiles which you can basically fill in with what you like. You can choose a profile picture, a username and fill in a bio. It shouldn't be too long, but there is space to explain what you like or what you're most likely to post and chat about. As well as this, you can share links with various other social media accounts. One of those accounts could be LinkedIn but that probably isn't the smartest idea. You don't really want to use Yik Yak to network with business contacts after all.

You don't have to create a profile if you would rather stay anonymous, but if you want to make friends and find someone to do something with you, it might be easier to create one. Yik Yak is a social media app so it makes sense that some people will want to be able to have some sort of presence. If you have a profile on Yik Yak, then your posts will be attributed to your account. Hopefully, this will lead to less bullying. The ability to make profiles follows on after the ability to chat with other users was introduced earlier this year.

No matter how you feel about this, it is a huge change for Yik Yak. They've made their name in schools and colleges as an anonymous app. Now you can sometimes see who exactly says something. This could lead to positive things but it could also lead to problems. How it'll turn out well...we'll just have to wait and see.
