Messenger Day - Facebook's Latest Steal

Facebook announced a "slimmed down" version of its Messenger app, Messenger Lite, for countries where older smartphones and slower net speeds are more common.

So, Facebook are in the process of quashing Snapchat and their Stories format.

They're doing this by trying to become dominant in countries where Snapchat isn’t popular yet. In Poland Facebook has launched “Messenger Day”, allowing people to share illustrated filter-enhanced photos and videos that disappear in 24 hours. What's that you say? That Snapchat fellow has something similar? No no no, you're being stupid.

The Facebook Definition

Messenger Lite is a slimmed down version of Messenger that offers the core features for markets with slower than average internet speeds and a prevalence of basic Android smartphones.

That's cool, but why can't we use it in the Western world? Over here we're forced to download the Messenger app (if you wish to continue conversation on it) as they removed the mobile web friendly version.

It's cool that it's tailored to a different part of the world. But it's also a way of capturing a growing market, and what better chance to use their competitors features than a country that doesn't predominantly use their apps?

With Messenger Lite, people are able to quickly and easily send text, photos and links to anyone using Messenger or Messenger Lite.

Messenger Lite is starting to roll out to people in Kenya, Tunisia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Venezuela - it's target audience .

A lot of emerging markets use WhatsApp, as it uses very little data and is a smaller app than the Facebook Messenger app.
The Lite app comes in at 10MB and includes all the core Messenger features - text, photo and video messaging is all there, including stickers.

Intersecting Circles

Their business model looks like a series of intersecting circles that are slowly merging into one. I mean, each social media app works in a different way, each have a certain discipline to make sense; you don't make a Facebook post that's exactly the same as your Instagram post or Tweet etc.

If you think of each circle as a different communication app then some users just use that app, others cross over into other apps, in other words: the more circles, the more competition.

But now, the few major messaging apps are owned by Facebook.

Messenger Lite is the cheapest way for them to buy up the competition of Snapchat.

Facebook has taken on this weird form. Dressed up like a cowboy with its WhatsApp holster, Instagram shaped gun, and bulbous Facebook Stetson.

This self elected sherif has taken it upon himself to clean up your town, to swallow your smoke signals and breathe them out in the shape of a giant ecliptic thumbs up.

"You see, in this world there’s two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig."
