Live-streaming has in recent times risen to dominate the social media landscape, with everyone from celebrities to politicians to everyday citizens getting in on the act, Just about every major social media platform available today offers live-streaming capabilities in one form or another, whether that be as an addition to their core services as Facebook have done, or a fundamental part of the service, as is the case with apps such as Snapchat and, to a greater extent, Periscope.

Periscope (yes, it still exists) was once hailed as the next big thing in social media, going head-to-head with rival service Meerkat on several occasions and even generating speculation as to whether it would gain enough popularity to knock its main competitor, namely Snapchat, from the top spot. In the end however the app seemed to somewhat fade into obscurity, but there remains a dedicated user base who continue to find value in the product.

To give the team over at Periscope their due, they continue to search for new ideas that may help them stay relevant in  a sea of apps all offering roughly the same service, with their latest efforts centring around the offering of financial incentives to their more avid of users via the recently-introduced Super Broadcasters Program.

The program launched back in June, allowing viewers to purchase ‘Super Hearts’ to be used as a form of virtual currency which could be passed on to broadcasters in a show of support and/or appreciation. Broadcasters who manage to build up a minimum star balance of 185,000 (roughly $175, according to TechCrunch) are then invited into the Super Broadcasters Program, which subsequently allows them to exchange these hearts for cash.

Initially Periscope was offering said Super Broadcasters 70% of all earnings from the coin packages. Now however they are upping these payments and will from this point on return all earnings directly to the broadcasters themselves, save a small administration fee of $1 per pay-out.

In addition to this, throughout the months of November and December the app is also offering holiday bonuses to its most popular broadcasters; “If you earn one million or more stars per month, you’ll be eligible to receive a $100 bonus. If you earn three million or more stars per month, you’ll be eligible for an additional $250 bonus ($350 total). Bonuses will be based on monthly earnings for November and December 2017 - not your pre-existing star balance. If you meet the minimum star balance each month, you can earn the bonus for both months.”
